Man altered checks and stole $67,000 from Garden City businesses: police

GARDEN CITY, NY – The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending April 19.

April 13

  • A 40-year-old man was arrested for stealing two company checks and altering and cashing them for a loss of $67,000. He was charged with impersonation, forgery and grand larceny.
  • Officers arrested a 32-year-old woman on Rockaway Avenue and 1st Street for impaired driving and dangerous lane use.
  • Three checks were allegedly stolen, forged and cashed for a total loss of $12,700.
  • Property was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Commander Avenue.
  • Officers investigated a report of an unauthorized cash withdrawal from a victim’s bank account.
  • A man was seen on surveillance cameras checking car door handles on Cathedral Ave.
  • A vehicle was reportedly damaged by unknown means while parked at Vassar Field.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with a suspended license and faulty brake lights.
  • One victim reported receiving an alert on their computer screen informing them that their computer was locked and that they needed to download an application to fix the problem. The victim entered his personal information on the app and later determined that it was a scam.

April 14

  • Firefighters and officers responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm and determined the cause to be faulty batteries.
  • Three truckers were cited for driving into a no commercial vehicle zone on St. James Street South.
  • Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after sweeping another vehicle on Old Country Road.
  • Officers responded to Hilton Avenue for a railroad gate malfunction and determined the cause to be ongoing track work.

April 15

  • A witness alerted the police to a seemingly lost and confused old man. After investigation, officers identified the man and reunited him with his family.
  • A Meadow Street driver has been charged with a suspended license, suspended registration and improper license plates.
  • A Stewart Avenue driver has been charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.

April 16

  • A person called police headquarters and said they received a text saying “Help” from a possible Garden City phone number. Detectives traced the number to a Massachusetts location and determined everything was in order.
  • The rear passenger window of a vehicle parked on Willow Street was found damaged.
  • A driver on Hilton Avenue and 3rd Street has been charged with driving without a license and passing a stop sign.
  • A driver on Stewart Avenue has been charged with driving without a license and unsafe lane use.

April 17

  • Graffiti was found on a building on 7th Street.
  • Property was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Salisbury Avenue.
  • Officers have been assigned to traffic and security details for the annual vintage car event and parade.
  • Officers responded to a report of water leaking from a pipe on 6th Street on the grounds of the Cathedral as well as Cherry Valley Avenue. The water department responded to the scene and shut off the water supply to the pipe.
  • Firefighters and gendarmes intervened in a residence for flooding in the basement. Upon arrival, firefighters found a leaking boiler pipe. They were able to shut off the water supply from the leaking pipe.

April 18

  • Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Nassau Boulevard crossing.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with a suspended license and incorrect license plates.
  • A tractor-trailer was pulled over on Clinton Road for multiple infractions. The driver was charged with driving with a suspended license, incorrect plates on the tractor and trailer, unregistered vehicle and various equipment violations.

April 19

  • At 6:30 a.m., an officer saw a vehicle stopped in the roadway on Rockaway Avenue. The driver was sleeping at the wheel with the car running and the keys in the ignition. The driver was arrested for DWI.
  • The rear bumper of a vehicle parked in an Adelphi University car park was found damaged by unknown means.
  • Graffiti was found on traffic barriers and signs near Denton Road and Tanners Pond Road.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
