Land Rover Converted to Fire Truck Wins Award

A CLASSIC Land Rover converted to a fire truck came out on top to win the coveted “Best of Boxing Day” trophy at the Classic Drive and Ride In Day at the Lakeland Motor Museum.

It beat the competition of around 150 vehicles that attended the popular event to be declared the most impressive example of the exhibition.

The 1969 Land Rover 2B Forward Control was originally built for the British Army. But it was sold in 1974 when it was registered on the road and was later used as a fire truck by agricultural machinery giant Massey Ferguson. It was converted into a fire engine by HCB Angus.

It is now owned by Kieran Hall, 26, of Ulverston, who was among dozens of people who attended the traditional Boxing Day rally at the Lakeland Motor Museum.

“It was a beautiful day made even more enjoyable coming home with a trophy,” says Kieran, who has only owned the fire truck for about two months.

“I have always loved Land Rovers. A relative of mine was crazy about them. I used to go around it and walk around in it. I also have the ambition to be a firefighter so it’s really a dream vehicle!

Kieran wins the Best of Boxing Day trophy, which is sort of a classic in itself. It was created from a vintage Hohm motor that was part of the Museum’s reserve collection. It was cleaned, mounted on a wooden plinth and turned into a trophy.

Lakeland Motor Museum Director of Operations Chris Lowe said: “It was nice to see a young enthusiast like Kieran getting involved in the classic vehicle hobby. His Land Rover 2B is a very well preserved example and stood out among a large collection of other vehicles.

The winning Land Rover is powered by a 2625cc 6-cylinder petrol engine and is 4-wheel drive. Of the 2,305 2B models built, 1,254 were equipped with the 2.6-liter engine.

Boxing Day Classic Drive and Ride In Day is open to owners of classic cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles, as well as newer sports cars, superminis and high performance sports cars.

This year’s event drew an impressive collection of vehicles, including 10 retro Land Rovers, 7 classic Minis and 3 Steyr-Puch Haflinger – small, light 4WD vehicles with high mobility.

Previous Best of Boxing Day trophy winners include a 1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom and a 1939 Ford 85 Bullnose American truck.

The Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow has over 30,000 exhibits, including over 140 classic cars and motorcycles. It also has an extensive Campbell Bluebird exhibit, set up in its own building, paying homage to the high-speed careers of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell.
