Autotrader’s best new automotive tech for 2022 is listed below (alphabetically / not ranked):

Best new automotive technology for 2022

Android car operating system
The electric Polestar 2 is the first car to use the new Android Automotive operating system. Not to be confused with Android Auto, this new OS is a system developed by Google and open to third-party developers. It has integrated Google applications such as Google Maps for navigation and Google Assistant. Just say “Ok, Google” to initiate voice commands, and Google Assistant can help you with music, maps, air conditioning, and more. Don’t worry if you don’t have an Android phone – this system also features wireless Apple CarPlay.

Electric trucks
While electric pickup trucks have been on the horizon for some time, today they are more realistic than ever. Some of them are still in the concept phase – like the Tesla Cybertruck and a Nissan concept pickup – but the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T will both start shipping in 2022. You might even spot one. GMC Hummer EV in the aisles by the end of 2021. Electric pickup trucks have a few big advantages over more traditional gasoline trucks, including the fact that electric torque translates into impressive capacities and thrilling performance. Some smart features are available, like Ford Intelligent Backup Power, which allows you to use the Ford F-150 Lightning as a generator.

EV box motors
Hot-rodders have long used crate motors to put a modern motor in a project car or race car, but now the crate motor scene is rocked by the availability of electric crate motors like the Chevrolet Performance. eCrate and the Ford Performance Eluminator. It’s not just traditional brands getting into the action – new startups like Electric GT and reVolt are specializing in this niche market. EV crate motors can be used in your vehicle restoration project, to add extra performance to your Tesla, or just about any other application you can imagine.

Ford BlueCruise
BlueCruise is Ford’s rival for the GM Super Cruise system. When driving on a Ford-mapped freeway, BlueCruise can take over and you can take your hands off the wheel and your feet off the pedals. However, it is not entirely fully automated – you should always remain vigilant behind the wheel with your eyes on the road, even if this makes highway driving safer and more relaxed. The Ford BlueCruise Hands-Free Driving System is available on the 2022 Ford F-150 and the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. For other eligible Ford vehicles, a live update with BlueCruise will be launched in the first quarter of 2022.

High-end furnishings
While the custom layout of trucks and vans isn’t new, it has recently gotten crazier and more upscale. A popular trend in the landscaping world is overlanding, which is basically off-roading long distances for a long time. Custom layouts make landing easier with upgrades like gear-laden roof racks, built-in tents, and in extreme cases, custom vans, built-in beds, and appliances to make it an all-in-one RV. -ground. With a tailor-made layout, the limits are up to your budget and your imagination.

Smartphone as digital car key
For many years, motorists have had the ability to control or monitor certain aspects of their car via a remote control, with features such as locking / unlocking their car or starting from a distance. Version 2.0 of this technology simply uses a smartphone as the key to the whole car. While Apple and BMW are currently offering this technology, along with Mercedes-Benz, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and a few others, more and more affordable vehicles are starting to offer this functionality. Hyundai offers it on the Sonata and other models for Android users, but we believe the offer will expand to more platforms and models over time. The concept is simple: your smartphone is all you need to get in, start and drive the car, as well as lock and unlock your car. You can also virtually share your car key with someone else, like a virtual valet key.

Interactive Jeep Passenger Display
An interactive screen for passengers is a new feature available in high-end Jeep models like the Grand Wagoneer. It’s a 10.25-inch screen above the glove box giving the front passenger different ways to enjoy the ride. It can give passengers GPS coordinates, rear audio and entertainment system control, and even a view of the vehicle’s cameras. Jeep models are getting more and more luxurious and high-tech without compromising off-road capabilities. This is another step in the transformation of high-end Jeeps into true luxury SUVs that can compete with Land Rovers.

LED lighting for classic cars
LED lighting is a great way to make a classic car a bit more modern – it not only improves the appearance of the vehicle, but it significantly improves visibility. Upgrading to HID headlights is a bit of a hassle, with transformers and extra wiring involved. However, upgrading to LEDs is a straightforward plug-and-play process as they don’t require a lot of power. It has become such a popular upgrade that a few online retailers are specializing in it. Sites like Dapper Lighting and Vintage Car LED can sell you LED lighting designed for your classic car, so this is not an obvious modification.

2022 Lucid Air
While naysayers once referred to it as “vaporware,” the Lucid Air has finally hit production. This luxury electric sedan is a serious competitor to the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT. On paper, the Lucid Air beats the Tesla Model S at its own game in terms of range and performance, producing up to 1,111 horsepower with a maximum range of 520 miles. With a lower starting MSRP $ 80,000, its price is also relatively reasonable compared to its competitors. In addition to its exciting electric powertrain, the Lucid Air has a luxurious interior with high-tech features like a 34-inch, 5K Glass Cockpit display, live updates, the DreamDrive suite of driver assistance features, a sleek mobile app and more.

Nissan VC-Turbo Engines
Gasoline engines continue to get cleaner and more efficient. Nissan’s innovative variable-compression turbocharged engines have been around for a few years in the Nissan Altima and Infiniti Q50. Now Nissan has just introduced a new version of the VC-Turbo as the base engine for the popular Nissan Rogue. It is the first 3-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, delivering 20 more horsepower, 44 more lb-ft of torque and a combined three mpg improvement over the outgoing Rogue engine. The smart engineering of this engine changes the compression ratio as you drive, which means performance is better when you hit it and efficiency is maximized while driving on the highway. The result is a well-balanced, fuel-efficient engine, and we hope to see this in other Nissan models soon.
